The
Building
This twelve-storey structure is
designed and built to provide convention, exhibition and special
event space over four main levels. It combines spectacular double
and triple-volume use of interior space in its main and public
areas, with smaller and more intimate break-away meeting rooms and
galleries on its mezzanine levels.
Its extensive glass frontage creates an open, inviting façade
from which delegates can see and be seen, especially when
travelling on the 26 escalators in their two escalator wells. The
main foyers and several of the meeting rooms enjoy excellent
natural daylight, and the building has been designed to
accommodate and provide access for disabled visitors. |

Sandton Convention Centre
|

Sandton forms a separate, self-sufficient metropolitan node in
this region. It has its own sophisticated atmosphere and appeal,
characterised by a thriving hotel, business and entertainment
district. |

Exhibition

No venue in Johannesburg is more ideally placed for exhibitions
than the Sandton Convention Centre. It is located in the
area with the hightest visitor attendance "draw factors"
in South Africa.
Its two exhibition levels have a
combined floor space of 10 000m2, which will
accommodate 500 3m x 3m stands in various configurations.
Each level has its own, completely independent and separate access
route to street-level docking and loading areas.
Exhibition 1 and 2
Any and every resource necessary for a successful and spectacular
exhibition is available in these two exhibition sections:
Exhibition 1
offers you 5 550m2
of floor space, while Exhibition 2 comes in at 5 518m2,
but has the added advantage of an adjacent, between-levels
restaurant gallery overlooking it from one side.
Ceiling height is 6,5m in both
sections, and the ceilings provide access to ample overhead
rigging fixtures and electrical points. Both sections are
airconditioned throughout.
A non-intrusive system of
pillars, set at 18m intervals, bring services such as water, wet
waste, normal and three-phase electrical power, and telecom links
(including digital, analogues and ISDN lines) to both exhibition
sections. Floor hatches spaced every 9m also give access to
these services, and any number of them can be interconnected. |

Press Release
SANDTON CONVENTION CENTRE
SCOOPS ANOTHER INTERNATIONAL CONVENTION
March 2004
The recent announcement of the
hosting of the 8th World Congress on Injury Prevention & Safety
Promotion in South Africa in 2006 underscores the growing international
recognition of Johannesburg as a prime convention destination and
Sandton Convention Centre as a preferred venue.
Nomaxabiso Majokweni,
Executive Director of Sandton Convention Centre, who was integrally
involved in the preparation of the successful bid document, says
organisers of major international conventions scrutinise in detail the
services and facilities of the venue proposed in the bid application.
These include not only the plenary venue but also meeting and break away
rooms as well as offices for the organisers' secretariat as well as the
media and communication centres.
BIG EVENTS - A
GROWING SECTOR AT SANDTON CONVENTION CENTRE
February 2004
A burgeoning portfolio of Big Events at Sandton Convention Centre has
prompted the appointment of a senior manager to handle this portfolio
exclusively. A dramatic escalation of these events, in the main
government-related and international conferences and exhibitions, is a
direct result of spin-offs from the successful hosting by the Centre of
the World Summit on Sustainable Development (WSSD).
Nomaxabiso Majokweni, the
Executive Director, has announced the appointment of Janine Meyer as
Senior Manager: Special Projects to head the section for Big Events.
Meyer has wide experience of managing conferences, exhibitions and
special events both at Sandton Convention Centre and other major venues.
